Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco Expands Affordable Homeownership in the Mission District.

SAN FRANCISO, CA (September 1, 2026) – Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco (Habitat Greater San Francisco) today announced the Sequoia Haven Homes project, which will create affordable homeownership opportunities in San Francisco’s Mission District. The nonprofit recently purchased a three-unit building previously damaged in a fire and will rehabilitate it into three three-bedroom homes for moderate-income buyers earning up to 110% of area median income (AMI).

Homeownership remains largely out of reach for many low- and middle-income residents in San Francisco, where the average home price is more than $1.4 million. Homebuyers earning the city’s median income ($155,850 for a family of four in 2025) would need to spend more than 75% of their income to afford a median-priced home. At the same time, many subsidy programs target households earning below roughly 80% of AMI, leaving moderate-income families with few pathways to buy in the city.

“San Francisco needs more pathways to homeownership for working families, and projects like Sequoia Haven are an important part of the solution,” said Corey Smith, Executive Director of the Housing Action Coalition. “By restoring an existing building and creating permanently affordable homes, Habitat Greater San Francisco is showing what’s possible through thoughtful infill development. We need more creative, community-focused projects like this across the city.”

The reconstruction will maintain the building’s original architectural character while restoring the property for new homeowners. By pairing thoughtful design with attainable homeownership opportunities, Habitat Greater San Francisco works to strengthen Bay Area neighborhoods and help families remain in communities where they might otherwise be forced to move away or remain renters indefinitely.

About the Homes

 

To bring affordable homeownership to San Francisco, where affordable land is scarce, we are bringing our construction and real estate expertise to an acquisition project in the heart of the Mission. With our newest
development, Sequoia Haven Homes, we will repair and rehabilitate three stacked units and create permanently affordable homeownership.

The homes feature:

  • Three-bedroom, two-bathroom units
  • 1,434 square feet
  • Exclusive yard space
  • Dishwasher, washer, dryer, stove/oven, and refrigerator
  • Basement storage
  • Convenient location in desirable Mission District

 

FAQs

When will this project be starting?

Habitat Greater San Francisco completed the purchase of the site last fall and is currently working through planning and permitting. Construction and the homebuyer application period are expected to begin this fall, with completion targeted for fall 2027.
