The Habitat Model

At Habitat Greater San Francisco (Habitat GSF) our Affordable Homeownership Program focuses on driving access to homeownership for working families in Marin, San Mateo and San Francisco counties. Often, these families have been excluded from the prospect of homeownership by systemic inequities and the housing crisis we are facing in the Bay Area. Our homeownership model is designed to remove barriers and enable Habitat GSF families to experience stability and build equity across generations:

  • Monthly housing payments are capped at 30% of income
  • Homebuyers put 0% down and pay 0% interest on their mortgage
  • Future homeowners put in up to 500 hours of “sweat equity” to help build their homes
