While 96% of Habitat GSF homeowners say they can now save for retirement, education, house repairs, or travel.

Homeownership has been linked to significantly better health outcomes***In part due to the lessening of frequent or involuntary moves. Habitat Greater SF homeowners on average stay in their homes five times as long as California renters.
Over 77% of Habitat Greater SF homeowners report good to excellent health, and 89% have not had to defer healthcare due to costs.
As one homeowner put it, “Feeling a sense of ownership has relieved me of the stress of…wondering if my landlord is going to raise the rent.”
The racial wealth gap, caused by hundreds of years of systemic discrimination, continues to compound. In 2025, in the US, Black homeownership and Hispanic homeownership rates were 28% and 26% points lower than the White homeownership rate****.
Black households make up 2% of homeowners in our area, and 5% of Habitat Greater SF’s homeowners. Hispanic households make up 9% of homeowners in our region, and 37% of Habitat Greater SF’s homeowners.
The impacts, especially in communities that have been historically excluded, are far reaching and are felt within families for generations.
