When Traci moved into her San Francisco home in 2006, she found more than a place to live: she found a neighborhood rooted in care. But over time, as her children grew and her health needs became more complex, the home that once held her family began to feel harder to navigate. With limited space, and no accessible path through the house, daily routines like cooking dinner, moving between rooms, or getting ready for the day became overwhelming. “My house didn’t have a lot of space,” Traci shared. “My hospital bed was in the dining room. I didn’t have a toilet downstairs. I couldn’t walk up the stairs or get to the shower.”
As a single parent managing health challenges, she worried most about her children and wanted them to feel safe, comfortable, and cared for at home. The repairs helped make her home more accessible, including improvements that allowed her to move through her kitchen more comfortably and regain the ability to prepare meals for her family. “Habitat gave me back the joy of cooking for my kids again,” she said.
That care extended beyond construction. From volunteers building Adirondack chairs to neighbors stepping in during hospital stays, Traci experienced what she describes as the essence of community: people showing up, offering support, and reminding her that she was not alone. Today, the impact of Habitat’s work continues to shape her daily life. The repairs did more than improve a house, they restored comfort and peace of mind for Traci and her family, making her house feel like home again.
“My home was built a long, long time ago. It has been long overdue for repairs. The relief from the “yes!” from Habitat was huge for me because it really helped me feel like they valued being part of the SF community. Before the repairs, my house wasn’t ADA compliant yet. There was no way for me to get my walker from point A to point B anywhere in my house. My home was in pieces and so was I, but Habitat helped put it (and me!) back together.”
