A Veteran’s Story

Danny Headshot

As a United States Marine, I have been exposed to the harshest realities of life – from witnessing the sacrifices and tragedies of war to experiencing the silent battles fought by our veterans on the home front. I have experienced the devastating impact of PTSD and veteran suicides…  issues that affect far too many of my fellow Marines and service members.  The weight of these experiences is something that never truly leaves you.

“But today, I want to share a story of hope. The Veterans Build event is more than just a project; it’s an initiative that uplifts veterans and empowers them to contribute to our communities. It brings veterans together, giving them a sense of purpose and a chance to heal by helping others.
My journey in the Marine Corps ignited a passion within me – a passion to serve and advocate for those in need. It’s a passion that has only grown stronger as I’ve witnessed the disparities right here in our own country.  While the United States stands as a beacon of prosperity and privilege, we still face astonishing rates of homelessness, housing insecurity, and poverty that too often go overlooked. It’s high time we shine a spotlight on these pressing issues and work together to make a difference.”

Stars-Stripes

California is home to the largest veteran population in the nation. Unfortunately, many of them experience homelessness on any given night. Veterans are overrepresented in the homeless population and veteran status is associated with a higher risk of homelessness.

The National Low Income Housing Coalition finds that 2.5 million veterans heading households are at least 55 years of age. Of those 2.5 million veterans, 24 percent have housing cost burdens.

Older veterans are more likely to have a disability — 35 percent versus 28 percent of older civilians — which may require home modifications, health and other supportive services as they age.
