made for this momentCommunity Impact in Our Region
Habitat Greater San Francisco (Habitat GSF) is a locally operated and funded affiliate, building and sustaining homeownership for families in San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin counties. In early 2021, we conducted our homeowner survey to hear directly from homeowners about the real impact of affordable homeownership in their lives. Learn more below about how your support is having a direct impact in your community and driving equity in our region.
Keeping Communities Whole
There was a 30% increase in migration out of San Francisco from 2019 to 2020*.
Meanwhile, only 6% of Habitat GSF homeowners plan to leave the Bay Area in the next 5 years.
According to one Habitat GSF homeowner, “We feel financially secure and don’t have to worry about leaving the Bay Area due to rising rents and cost in general.”
In California, 20% of residents pay over 50% of their income on housing.**
While 83% of Habitat GSF homeowners say they can often or always save for emergencies, retirement, or education.
According to one Habitat GSF homeowner, “We are able to not stress about how much are we going to pay every month for rent, we are building equity and savings, we have been able to go to college, we feel safe at HOME!”
Between 2000 and 2015, as housing prices rose, San Francisco lost nearly 3,000 low-income Black households—a 17% decrease—primarily in historically Black neighborhoods.***
From 2011-2021 Habitat GSF made critical repairs to 203 homes, 78% of which were owned by Black or African American clients.
Home preservation allows long-standing members of the community to maintain their homes and their homeownership. This allows them to pass along the equity of that home to future generations.
Changing the Narrative
55% of the population in our region identify as BIPOC, while this same community makes up only 37% of the homeowners.****
We are proud that Habitat GSF homeowners represent the diversity in our region, with 85% identifying as BIPOC.
According to one Habitat GSF homeowner, “It was a struggle to make sure I had a safe place for my kids. This opportunity gave me back hope and confidence.”
Affordable homeownership provides more than simply a roof over your head.
The impacts, especially in communities that have been historically excluded, are far reaching and are felt within families for generations. Please consider donating to help us continue to provide the opportunity of affordable homeownership to even more families in San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin counties.
