Today we dragged our busted office fridge to the dumpster.* Why? Because it’s far cheaper to get a new appliance than fix an old one. Redemtech is fed up with this culture of waste. Redemtech refurbishes large volumes of PCs from businesses around the world. They have committed to providing refurbished computers for 10,000 Habitat for Humanity partner families.
Electronic waste is the fastest growing category of trash. Reusing 50 computers (both tower and monitor) means energy savings equal to the electricity that it takes to power 34 houses per year, Greenhouse Gas reduction equal to the removing of 24 cars from roads per year, and Hazardous Waste reduction equal to the weight of 360 bricks. On top of that, more than 75% of the 40 million computers American businesses replaced in 2010 were four or fewer years old.
The donated computers are from Redemtech’s Red Rabbitt™ brand, which features laptop computers refurbished to the highest standards. Every computer undergoes a rigorous reconditioning process within their facilities, including complete data-wiping, OEM-level testing, and all the various repairs and upgrades necessary. The computers are professionally packaged and come standard with genuine software pre-installed and a 90-day limited exchange warranty for that euphoric brand-new merch sensation. Affiliates must be willing to provide basic Computer Training and Internet safety to ensure computers are delivered to families that have demonstrated a need for a home computer.
So far 60 HabitatGSF families have signed up to receive computers, and we handed out a bunch this past week. Fingers crossed that more computers are coming to the Bay. Big thanks to Redemtech for this generous gift.
*Okay, maybe we put it in a truck and disposed of the CFC-filled sucker at the dump, but it really ruins the pithiness to explain how responsible we are when it comes to large appliance disposal.
